Our memory resource
Each of us have innate resources to help us meet our physical and emotional needs – one of which is Memory.
Our Memory is something we often take for granted, not realising what a powerful resource it is in our personal growth.
Here, in our latest monthly resources blog, we explore Memory and how it is a crucial tool to aid our wellbeing.
Past experiences
Our Memory allows us to draw on experiences we have had before and use them to handle new situations today.
The ability to recall what happened in the past, combined with our Rational Thinking resource, gives us the ability to cope and decrease our worry when facing new and unexpected circumstances.
You may be feeling anxious about a big presentation you have to give or an upcoming job interview, for example.
But if we recall the last time we spoke publicly, or faced a panel of people, we can draw on that experience to understand the situation better and put it in context.
If you have faced stressful situations before, you are better prepared to face them again.
The passage of time
We all know the adage ‘time is the best healer’. Our Memory is key to this.
Our Memory helps us understand the passing of time and that no matter how bad a situation is now, it will pass and things will get better.
Everyone has times in their lives when they feel anxious, stressed or down, usually caused by a situation we don’t feel in control of or that has put us under unexpected pressure.
However, thanks to our Memory resource, we learn that these situations pass. You can then use this new memory to tackle the next situation that makes you anxious.
Good memories
In times of stress and anxiety, it can help to use our Memory to think about positive times we have had – good times with friends or enjoyable experiences.
Being able to recall these positive memories shows us that there have been happy times in our lives, and there will be more to come.
Our Memory helps us to draw on happy moments we have experienced to put stressful situations into context and give us hope for the future.
